Ch.1 and Ch.2

  • What influences teachers and students to use technology in the classroom?
Technology is very important especially when it comes to school.  I don't think i've ever been in a classroom without a computer or some other type of technological device being used.  Technology is all around us, so why not embrace it!  A major reason teachers have us use technology is because well everyone else is.  We need to keep up with the majority of the society around us.  Technology has only advanced and will continue to do so.  Teachers allow us to use technology in order to understand the society around us and to get comfortable with something that is gonna be around for a very long time.  Students like to use technology to research things.  We always heard our parents say " well back in my day we used textbooks when we needed to find something."  Times have changed.  Times have made everything more advanced including technology.  We have so many study tools available to us on the internet like quizlet, khan academy, brain pop, even online dictionaries.  The opportunities are endless and we are learning everyday because of it.

  • A paragraph in which you reflect on the ISTE standards. Specifically cite 1 standard that is meaningful to you and 1 that seems outside your current skill set.  (Include an explanation).
The ISTE is the International society for technology in education.  This is a group that helps teachers learn more about technology for education.  Along with this, there are different standards for students and educators.  They describe exactly " what type" of student or educator you are or relate to the most.  I personally see myself as the creative communicator for the standards or students.  This is described as students who know how to communicate there thoughts with others and have complex ideas you can use for teaching others.  I find myself a very easy person to talk to which allows me to be able to communicate with others easily.  One standard that I need to work on more is the knowledge constructor.  Personally, being a knowledge constructor to me seems like the people who have a better grasp on the concept of technology.  You would be able to demonstrate certain things on the computer, be able to cite information and just know your way around a computer very well.  I would like to work towards that to become more comfortable with technology and using it for those purposes.

  • A paragraph on whether or not you agree with the label “digital native” for today’s youth. What does it mean to be a digital native? Have you seen differences between how you (digital native) and most of your teachers (digital immigrants) use technology? If so, describe them and what their impact has been on your learning experience. What differences do you anticipate between you and your future students in terms of how you use technology?
I honestly don't agree with the labels of " digital native" and " digital immigrants".  I know many people assume that todays youth is better with technology than the older generation just because we have been around for less of the change.  Which is true to some degree however, is it possible to just be more advanced in certain portions of technology?  Me being the " digital native" I should be good at all things computers right?  Wrong.  I can tweet, post insta pics, change my facebook status, online shop, and write a paper.  Now thats all fun and stuff but not very helpful in terms of educating others and using the internet for a more purposeful purpose.  The " digital immigrants" I know can do way more than I ever could.  They fix my computer when its broken, they know how to fix " the cloud" when its over filled, they know how to go into settings and magically fix anything that has ever happened to your computer, they even know how to set up online bank accounts and direct deposits.  I feel like no one likes to go through change so we automatically assume whoever goes through less change gets it easier.  But this isn't the case.  Everyone is knowledgeable about different thing relation to technology.  But I feel like labeling our knowledge of technology based on our age is super inaccurate.  We would judge based of age in other things so why technology.  We can learn so much from the people around us.  Thats the best part of technology, we as people are always learning new things.  Websites are being updated, new things are being created, and sites are becoming more advanced.  We are all (Digital native and digital immigrants) learning together.

Journal 2

Microsoft Word is the go to icon on a computer.  We always use it in school.  Ive used it to write papers, design flyers, randomly doodle and even to make charts and graphs.  Its something that is super useful and easy to use.  Many of the assignments teachers use to give us were designed off of Microsoft.  Sometimes teachers use Microsoft for in class discussions to record all the data from the class.  In elementary school we learned exactly how to use Microsoft and all the things we could use it for.  The possibilities are endless!!  As I've grown up its still been used.  Ive used it to write essays, make resumes and make multiple designs needed for jobs.  I love the fact that we have a program that allows us to do so much. Copyright and fair use of materials is not something most students tend to look up and learn about.  Yes we are taught not to copy other peoples work without proper citation however we never learn about the di...

Technology and teacher professional development

I learnt that there are so many different websites that can help with professional development.  We were able to see websites that were specific to certain grades and some that were open to all grades.  Its amazing to see how many resources teachers, students, and even parents have. By viewing the bookmarks and annotations of others I was able to see all the different website that could be used for professional development.  Things such as linkedin, discovery education, even crayola.  There were a lot of opportunities for help that I may not have noticed if someone didn't comment on or bookmark them!

Technology with Keeks!

Technology and Kiana don't go together.  From 2nd grade typing classes to college level blogging, technology has always been difficult.  What makes it so difficult?  Is it that fact that there's to many components to understand, or the fact that we don't want to take the time to actually learn these components?  I was always the kid who had a question in computer class.  " How do I go back to the other page?".  " How do change my font to the really pretty ones?".  " How do I turn on my computer?". ( All various examples of typical Keeks questions).  Thank heavens I started to pay more attention in computer class because technology has only gotten more advanced.  We use it to write essays, do research, search various problems that keep occurring with our Iphone, even to keep up with the latest Kardashian trends.  Technology surrounds us in so many ways yet most of us don't even know how to use it to the fullest.  Me personally, all I...
